The French first established Fort Conti here in 1679. Fort Denonville followed (1687-88) before the French began what is now known as Fort Niagara in 1726. Britain gained control of Fort Niagara during the French & Indian War. After the American Revolution they turned it over to the United States. Fort Niagara was recaptured by the British in 1813 and returned to the United States at the end of the War of 1812. Fort Niagara was a barracks and training station for American soldiers during the World Wars. The last army units were withdrawn in 1963.
