Long Description:
Rock City Park is located a few miles south of Olean, New York and
is believed to be the worlds largest exposure of quartz
conglomerate. It was discovered around 1890 while scouting out the
area for places to drill for oil. The area quickly became a tourist
attraction as the word got around that the huge, many stories high
rocks were found, tucked away in the hills south of Olean. The
place became so popular that a huge pavilion and hotel were built
near the rock formations and several well known celebrities came to
visit, including John Phillip Sousa, who came and played music at
the pavilion. The hotel and pavilion are long gone and now, at that
location, sits the visitors center and gift shop with all sorts of
memorabilia going back to the early days of this popular location.
There are several trails that lead down to the bottom of the rock
formations, allowing visitors to see the rocks from a different
perspective, showing just how enormous these rocks really are. This
Native American trail tree can be found near the end of the main
trail, not far from a rock stairway, that was believed to have been
constructed by Native Americans, long before settlers came to the
area. Rock City Park does charge an entrance fee of $4.50 per adult
and $2.50 for children 6 to 12. The park is open from May to
October from 9 am to 6 pm.
