The idea of a San Jose area Hall of Fame was first proposed by then-mayor Tom McEnery during the vote for public funding of the San Jose Sports Arena (now HP Pavilion). Space was set aside in the main concourse for bronze plaques of of the athletes, which bear their portraits and their sports career information.
To be eligible, athletes must have played or coached for a team or school in Santa Clara County, or represented the county in individual competition.
As of December, 2008, there are 67 honorees.
