After the last lighthouse keeper left in 1961 (the lighthouse was automated), the 1898 North Head lighthouse began to deteriorate. Thankfully the Coast Guard restored the lighthouse in the mid-80s and opened it to the public under the direction of the Cape Disappointment State Park. The lighthouse keeper's dwellings are located a half mile into the woods from the lighthouse itself, and have also been restored. Today, park personnel stay in half of the dwellings, but the other half of the dwellings and a single-family house are available for overnight stays. They include a standard kitchen with dishwasher and microwave oven, and television with VCR. Linens are provided. This is a popular location for seasonal whale watching, hiking, beach combing, surf fishing and summer tours. To reserve an overnight stay at the keeper's dwellings call (360) 902-8844. Instructions for logging waymark: A photograph is required of you (or your GPS receiver, if you are Waymarking solo) and the place.
