Netherland Inn was both a stage stop and a boatyard. The photo in the 1939 American Guide shows that the full porches on two floors were addeded later.

The NETHERLAND INN (private), 2144 Lee Highway, is a three story structure of stone and frame, with massive chimneys at both ends. A two-story octagonal veranda on the front relieves the severity of the massive gabled structure. The Netherland Inn, known locally as the Old Tavern, was built in 1811 by Richard Netherland, a big slave-holder and land-owner. It was the center for the gay social life of upper East Tennessee in the early nineteenth century and a regular stopping place for Andrew Jackson on his trips from the Hermitage to Washington. Presidents Andrew Johnson and James K. Polk frequently rested there. A bronze tablet on the outer wall gives the date of construction as 1812, but the best authorities place the date as 1811. " (TENNESSEE, A Guide to the State, 1939)

In 1939, the property was listed as private, but since 1968, it has been owned by the Netherland Inn Association to be preserved as a historic museum complex. Lee Highway/11W has been rerouted across the north side of town, thus the building is now located on Netherland Inn Road. The small porch has now been replaced by two full porches along the river side of the tavern. The complex continues to expand with other building consistent with the period being constructed.
