Padre Pio was born to a farming family on May 25, 1887 in Pietrelcina, southern Italy. At 15, he began studies as a novitiate of the Capuchin Friars and was ordained as a priest in 1910. In 1918, he began to experience stigmata, wounds similar to those experienced by Jesus during his passion and cruxifiction. He apparently was the first stigmatized priest in the history of the Roman Catholic Church.
He devoted his life to service and austerity, acts which revealed his deep union with God. He passed away in 1968 and his funeral was attended by over 100,000 mourners.
Pope John Paul II canonized Padre Pio of Pietrelcina a Saint on June 16, 2002.
