Santa Caterina was born as Caterina Benincasa in Siena on March 25th, 1347, and died on 29th of April, 1380. She was canoninized by Pio II in 1461. In 1970, Paul VI declares her "doctor of the church".
The statue was placed in 1961, in occasion of the 500th anniversary of her canonization.
Her greatest achievement was convincing the pope to move the papal headquarters back to Rome from Avignon (France).
