Passenger trains stopped here first in 1877, 6 years after the city's founding by General William Palmer. The city was built with money from the nearby gold mines, but prospered as a resort for wealthy easterners who wanted clean air and cool nights for health reasons. The restaurant there now still sees trains go by, but no longer serves as a depot. Giuseppe's Depot Restaurant does not usually get high ratings for the food, but the ambience for railroad fans is the best in town.
