About Us
The mission of Florida Blood Services Foundation is to develop community awareness and financial support for Florida Blood Services to ensure a safe and adequate blood supply, while advancing transfusion medicine.
Florida Blood Services Foundation is a non-profit organization that is not subsidized by the Government, the Red Cross, or the United Way. Florida Blood Services relies upon the generosity of the public to continue its life-saving work for our community and our nation.
Although FBS is reimbursed for collecting, processing and distributing blood and its components, there is no income from education, research, training, bloodmobiles, bone marrow support, free cholesterol-screening for donors or other advancements in transfusion medicine. That's why the financial and community support by the Florida Blood Services Foundation is so important.
Funds raised by the Florida Blood Services Foundation support:
New Biotechnology Research Center
Educational and awareness programs
Research and state-of-the-art laboratory equipment
James N. Patterson Research and Education Fund
Acquisition of blood collection mobiles
Donor testing for the National Bone Marrow Donor Program
Educational exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI)
Funds are raised from individuals, corporations, public and private foundation grants, investment gains, brunches, golf tournaments and other special events.
Since 1980, the foundation has provided well over a million dollars in
philanthropic support to Florida Blood Services, saving countless lives.
Why is giving to Florida Blood Services Foundation important?
With the maturing of the American managed care system of health care delivery, the economics of providing quality blood to a community has changed substantially. Healthcare providers do not want to pay the cost of research and important testing for a safe blood supply. Additionally, the high cost of cutting-edge technology for the collection, testing and distribution process, and the cost of research and implementation of disease-fighting breakthroughs, must be paid for through the fund raising efforts of the FBS Foundation.
