The Atchison County Courthouse was constructed beginning in 1882 with the cornerstone laid on October 19, 1882 and the court receiving the building May 9, 1883. The building was designed by Edmund J. Eckel and George R. Mann of St. Joseph. Due to the lack of funds when first built the courthouse was little more than a shell, the interior was completed as funds became available.
