Sign text: The town was laid off in 1815 as the county seat of Scott County. The original name was Winfield, for General Winfield Scott, was changed to Estillville for Judge Benjamin Estill. In 1886, the name was changed to Gate City because of its situation in Mocassin Gap, through which the old Wilderness Road to the West passed. It was incorporated, 1892.
From the city website: "The Town of Gate City lies in the mountains of Southwest Virginia, an area rich in both pioneer and Native American history. With a population of 2,159, Gate City is seat of Scott County’s government, and the principal gateway from Virginia to East Tennessee and the City of Kingsport.
The Town offers residents a quiet location with several vintage and antique stores, as well as department stores, hardware stores, supermarkets, several restaurants, a park with little league baseball facilities, an elementary, middle and high school and much more, all with quick access to a major metropolitan area in neighboring Kingsport."
