There are many fire stations situated on this stretch of Route 30. Each of these little towns all have their own fire station and their version of a fireman's memorial out front. I like this one the best. They took the traditional "In Memory of our Members" plaque and mounted it on a huge marble stone, the kind you see at a cemetery. Beneath the plaque is a large group of names on another plaque, and beneath that, yet another plaque, devoid of names, but waiting patiently for the next tragedy. Nothing like preparing for the future.

In the center is a fireman statue. The figure is in full firefighter gear with an axe. It stands about 2.5 feet high. There is a dedication plaque for the statue, on a stand which rises above the statue and is situated to the rear. The inscription reads, "Dedicated in Memory of Thomas C. Elvins who died in the line of duty serving his community. February 7, 1926." There is a terrific website you can visit to find out all about this firefighter and the tragedy which claimed his life. --> (visit link)

Finally, to the right of this statue is a smaller granite or marble cemetery like-stone. At the top is a plaque which bears the logo of the fire Department. Beneath it is another plaque which has "A Fireman's Prayer" in scribed on it. It reads,

"When I am called to duty, God, whenever flames may rage;
Give me strength to save some life, whatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little child before it is too late
Or save an older person, from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me
To guard my every neighbor and protect his property.

And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life,
Please bless with your protecting my children and my wife.

This is a larger fire station in comparison to the several other located up and down Rt. 30. The origins of this firehouse date back to the 1800s. There is a nice bell also out front, situated directly in front of Elvins Hall. Fire Company # 2 serves out of a three bay building with a hall attached to it. The building is called “ Elvins Hall” named after the family who has given to the Independent Volunteer Fire Company of Hammonton over the years. The original firehouse was located at this same exact site.
