Cal Poly University (San Luis Obispo) operates a 3200 acre ranch which consists of redwood forest, cattle rangeland, crop acreage and apple orchards, to be used for field education. Swanton Pacific Ranch also includes this live-steam railroad operation, which echoes the railroading history of the area. The ranch is on land which was the end of the line from Santa Cruz (for a railroad which was planned to go to San Francisco).
The public is welcome to walk around the railroad tracks and equipment, and may wangle a ride along on volunteer work days if the engineers fire up the locomotives. At least one day a year is an open house, barbecue, and train rides all afternoon.
