During the Civil War Rondo was a gateway through which many Texas soldiers passed to reach the active sectors of the Confederate Army. These soldiers camped in various areas around the town, resting for a short period, receiving last-minute drill instruction and equipment. In 1862 the black measles swept through the camps, killing many. These soldiers were buried at various places near their campgrounds, but after the war the Rondo citizens moved their remains to this cemetery. They were buried five to a grave in seventeen graves side by side. Some of the soldiers were identified in later years, but many remain unknown.
The Van Zandt County Texas Historical Commission placed a marker at this site in 1996, and in 2006 the U.S. National Register of Historic Places marker was placed.
The cemetery is located east of Texarkana, Arkansas, north of US. Hwy 82. Founded in 1839 this cemetery is the resting place of many area pioneers and continues to serve the community today.
