William Hunt Gleason was sent to Florida by the War Department in 1865 to tour the southern portion of the State to determine the feasibility of establishing a colony for former slaves. In 1868 he won election to the post of Florida Lieutenant Governor and resigned in 1870.
The William H. Gleason House was built around 1892. The family owned and lived in the house until 1990. Isabelle Gleason was the last Gleason family member to live in the home until she died.

Nestled under live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, The Old Pineapple Inn historic bed and breakfast is housed in the William H. Gleason House as listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located in the heart of the Eau Gallie Art District in Melbourne FL, this three-story Victorian home remained in the Gleason Family from its initial construction in 1886, until 1995. The structure and grounds have recently undergone an extensive renovation.

Built in 1886 as a home for the William H. Gleason family, the inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Gleason was the first lieutenant governor of Florida and an important figure in early Melbourne. He owned extensive real estate in the area, coowned the Eau Gallie Saw Mill and was a boat builder, among other interests.
The three-story Queen Anne home, with its gracious veranda, gingerbread trim and elegant turret, is one of the loveliest historic homes in Central Florida. It sits on a spacious corner lot on quiet Pineapple Avenue, which runs parallel to the Indian River, surrounded by a white picket fence and framed by large oak trees.
