From Bennington Banner website:
In the Battle of Bennington Aug. 16, 1777, most enemy soldiers and officers killed (about 225) and captured (800) came from Germany, plus some Loyalists from this area. Casualties on our side were about 30 killed and 40 wounded, most of whom were part of the New Hampshire and Massachusetts militias who fought here. Of local men killed or who died of wounds, there were four.
All four were private soldiers of the local militia, all adult family men. They were Nathan Clark Jr., John Fay, Daniel Warner and Henry Walbridge. Probably two of them were brought dead from the battlefield into town; one was wounded but still alive, and one was probably buried hastily at the battlefield. So far as is known, every other soldier of both sides killed in the battle was buried at the battlefield.

Henry Walbridge was a brother to Ebenezer Walbridge of the family that lived on the east side of town and later built the first papermill at Papermill Village. His grave in the old cemetery is marked.
