From the Smithsonian Art Inventory (
visit link) :
"Full-length portrait of George Washington at the age of 43, dressed in the uniform of the Continental Army. He wears a hat with flower, cape, boots, jacket, vest and pants. He holds a sword with both hands in front of him. Below him, on the lower base a woman and child are standing, symbolic of History or Education. The woman is pointing upward at the statue of Washington, with her proper left arm. The child gazes upward and holds an open book at his side in his proper right hand.
This was the first civic statue presented to the City of Milwaukee and reportedly the first public monument of Washington erected west of the state of Virginia. It was a gift of Miss Elizabeth Plankinton and cost approximately $20,000. IAS files contain photocopy of 1909 postcard of sculpture."
