George Washington visited Waterford, Pennsylvania as a representative of Governor Robert Dinwiddie of Virginia. His mission was to inform the French settlers of the area that the land where they were living and had built a fort had been claimed by the English. The 21-year old future president needed 79 days to travel on this first mission. Alas, his mission was unsuccessful as the French settlers and soldiers remained in the area for another six years.
