With 70 years of life, Susan Jane Humes was witness to some of the first and vital growth steps of the United States. When she moved with her husband, William, to Rensselaer, Indiana, the small development was evolving from a pioneer post into a stable city. Susan saw the country change again with the U.S. Civil War as many of the city's men went off to assist the Union.
Susan Jane Humes and her husband are buried in Weston Cemetery. Susan's monument is made of zinc and her husband's is made of stone. Susan's monument is decorated with images that symbolize peace and Christianity.
