Infamous fire in May of 1977. The fire broke out in the building, killing 165 people here for a performance. The tragedy resulted in changes in fire laws. Also the first class action suit occurred as a result of this incident.

Originally, the cause was suspected to be aluminum wiring. During the most recent anniversary, it was suggested that the fire might have been set, perhaps by local organized crime. See the historical signs at this location.
