The church stands next door to a traditional Lake District 17th. Century pub,"The Punch Bowl".
In 1869 Crosthwaite became a separate ecclesiastical Parish, and although the church (chapel) had been rebuilt in 1817 it was felt that the parish should have a rather more imposing church, appropriate to it's new status,Thus it was the church here today was built in the late 19th. century.
In 1885 a new tower 53 feet high was built,to replace the old one which had stood since 1626.Between 1878 and 1885 the Chancel was added in the form of an apse.
The external walls are faced with Limestone from nearby Whitbarrow Scar.
All the stained glass in the church dates from the time of the rebuilding.
The church has 3 bells, which consist of an undated bell which is probably Late 15th or early 16th century, and 2 bells cast by Christopher Hodson of London,in 1695.C.Hodson became famous when he cast "Great Tom" of Oxford in 1680,and a ring of 8 bells for Durham Cathedral in 1693.
