The Royal is the oldest part of what is now the Royal & Derngate Theatres. It opened in 1884 with the Opera House. It cost £12,000 to build and was designed by Charles Phipps. It opened with a production of Shakespeare’s "Twelfth Night".
The modern Derngate Theatre is joined onto the Royal and was built in 1983. The whole area was refurbished and reopened in 2006 after a £14 million redevelopment. The University of Northampton describes the facilities today:
'The Royal is predominantly a producing house with a national reputation for its innovative and cutting edge productions.
"The Royal Theatre is fast becoming a regional player of national significance"
The Independent
"There's a new theatrical beacon in the Midlands"
The Observer
The Northampton Centre for the Arts is dedicated to providing a place where people can dance, display art, make music, perform theatre and be immersed in the creative process. It hosts more than 250 performances and gallery exhibitions for all ages each year.'
