Long Description:
This used to be Fort Ord army base, now decommissioned and turned
over to the state of California for a park. The park is free and
open to the public, although there are no facilities. Coordinates
are for a trail down a gully to the beach at the base of the bluff,
from the main entrance at Eighth Street.
It has been used by surfers since the day the army left. Swimming
is a dangerous possibility, due to steep dropoff and strong
undertow. The water temperature is between 55 - 58 degrees, so it's
not warm enough for a long swim unless the swimmer is protected
with a wetsuit.
On the other hand, the gorgeous scenery and four miles of secluded
beach make this a great destination for a day spent sunbathing,
picnicking and walking along the shore.
