On the afternoon of February 15, 1997, Officer Moore responded to a bank alarm at the location and became involved in a struggle with the suspect. They fell through the window behind the memorial, and in the ongoing struggle Officer Moore was shot five times. He sustained multiple shots to his neck and one that penetrated his vest.
Officer Moore was survived by his wife, two daughters aged 8 and 5, and a 9 month old son.
The suspect was convicted of Capital Murder and sentenced to death.
