Born in Connecticut and educated at Yale, Nathan Hale became a teacher and taught in New London until 1775 when he joined the Connecticut Militia in support of the American Revolution. He later became a captain in the Continental Army. Following the 1776 Battle of Long Island, Hale was captured in New York City while on a spy mission to determine British troop movements. He was hanged at the age of 21 by the British and posterity attributes to him the words, "I only regret that I have but one life to give my country."
Hale's schoolhouse had been located at the corner of State and Union Streets, but is now found at the Parade (Union Plaza). According to the NY Times, this little schoolhouse has been wandering for most of its life.
