The sanctuary grove harbors about 25,000 Monarch butterflies spending the winter. The Monarchs migrate as much as 2000 miles along the US west coast to arrive here in October. They cluster in large masses in the shelter of the trees, resembling dead leaves, but when the weather is warmer than 55 degrees, a cluster will begin to fly. They seek nectar nearby, returning to their shelter before evening. The skies around Pacific Grove, especially right at the sanctuary, can be a delightful sight graced with fluttering Monarchs on any quiet winter day. In February and March, they depart northward on their spring migration.

The main entrance to Sanctuary Grove is a marked easement past an inn, with parking along the street. There is a short walking trail through the sanctuary which passes trees where the butterflies reside. On winter weekends, docents are available to answer questions and loan out binoculars for a better view.
