The building was once Higgins Castle Brewery in 1885, then became Bennett's Works where an interesting account can be found here:

The GPO took over the site and used it as the sorting office for the postal service and then Bedford Museum moved in. The area is being redeveloped at the moment with many impressive improvements to the castle site and beyond.
