Founded in 1972 by Richard and Bonnie Jo Shapiro as "King Richard's Faire", it was purchased in 1989 by the Renaissance Entertainment Corporation and re-opened as the "Bristol Renaissance Faire". Located on a 30 acre wooded site containing a permanent village of shops, pubs and performance stages, the faire is open on weekends from the second weekend in July through Labor Day. Bristol recreates a day in the life of Elizabethan England - in this instance, the summer day in 1574 when Queen Elizabeth visited the English hamlet of Bristol.
