The 'Manuka State Wayside Park' (13.4 acres) is state park with arboretum located approximately 19 miles west of Na'alehu, on the Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11), Hawaii (island), Hawaii.
The arboretum (8 acres) was originally planted in the mid 1800s with native and introduced plants. It now contains 48 species of native Hawaiian plants and more than 130 species of other exotic plants and flowers, and is surrounded by the South Kona Forest Reserve. It is part of the 25,500 acre Manuka Natural Area Reserve.
Part of the larger Manuka Natural Area Reserve, Manuka State Wayside is an excellent example of mid to lowland native mesic forest. This is a relaxing spot to pull over for a picnic or just to take a shady stroll among the native and introduced trees when traveling between Kona and Volcano.- [BigIsland.Org]
