The Carnegie Library
The carnegie Library was constructed in 1906 in the Beaux Arts style. It exhibts classic features including a rusticated basement level constructed of large stone. the main floor, which is constructed of brick, is divided near the top by a running frieze, creating the appearance of a third level or attic. The most interesting feature is the main entrance whch illustrated the architectural plasticity of the Beaux Arts style. Brick simulated pilasters create a porch-like entrance which is topped with a circular arch, branching from the running frieze. (Info from plaque.)
In 1907 the library succesfully received a grant from steel magnate Andrew Carnegie to build a new multi-person building, featuring a library
Despite being a supporter of culture in general, Carnegie was opposed to the multipurpose facility the village intended to build, as it exceeded his default start-up donation of $10,000. A meeting with the Brampton Board of Trade's R.J. Copeland, and a promise from Brampton itself to up its funding from $1000 to $1250 a year, Carnegie provided another $12,500 for the town's long-time showpiece facility.
The Architects A. Frank Wickson and Alfred H. Gregg designed the Carnegie Library in 1906.
