This building was the house of Dr. John Rogers who gained fame in the mid 1800s as a staunch abolitionist and part of a network of people who helped escaped slaves find their way north to safety. Dr. Rogers hid slaves in his house until safe conduct could be arranged for them.
The building was originally constructed by Dr. Rogers in 1830, he had previously purchased the land in 1817 at the age of 20. He lived there until he died in 1882.
In 1843, Rogers and Rev. Amos Dresser, the famed Lane Seminary rebel, drafted a strong anti-slavery memorial for the New Richmond Presbyterian Church and submitted the statement to the Cincinnati Presbytery. Rogers practiced medicine for over 60 years and is most noted for the delivery of Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President of the United States, in Pt. Pleasant, 1822.
