According to the lodge history it was first organized in 1848 and first met in a hall on York St in Newport. The Lodge met for the first time at a new Masonic Temple when it moved to the one located at York and Mayo (Seventh) Street in Newport on December 1, 1886. Robert Burns Lodge #163 finally got it's own building when this one was opened 1964. The lodge was built under an agreement with Brothers of Newport Lodge #368 where the lodges each contributed 50% of the cost of the new building. The agreement continues today.
The lodge was named for Robert Burns, Scottish poet and master mason.
