The Barbara Fritchie Restaurant in Frederick MD has long been a local landmark and roadsign for good eats. The restaurant is located just west of the city of Frederick on US 40. Look for the Giant Candy Cane.

I can recall this Candy Cane being in place since at least the early 1970's when we moved into the area. It's the roadside landmark for the Barbara Fritchie Restaurant frequented by locals, and it's a draw for tourists who pass by and see it. It's our favorite stop for a good breakfast on most any trip heading west of us.
The restaurant was named after a prominent Frederick woman who was said to be immortalized by the lines in John Greenleaf Whittier's 1864 poem Barbara Frietchie:
"Shoot, if you must, this old gray head, But spare your country's flag," she said.
The flag story has been determined to be ficticious but Fritchie was an important figure. Her home and grave can be visited in Frederick, MD. For more information on Barbara Fritchie: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Fritchie_(person)

The food at the restaurant is not fancy but it is good "home-style cooking" and it's served with a smile. They serve breakfast all day. Yum!

A Google search will find old unhappy reviews of the place, but new management has turned the restaurant back around. Our very recent visit found the place clean and the food good.
