There are few pictures of Bedford which do not feature this bridge. It is the original crossing for pedestrians over the River Great Ouse. Built in 1888 there are four plaques detailing the bridge's construction and opening.

The design is by John Webster and uses ironwork from E Page and Co of Bedford. The suspension uses iron bow string lattice girder with a 100ft span. The walking surface consists of concrete laid over corrugated iron plates.

There were major repairs completed in the 1980s and the bridge was reopened by The Mayor Councillor G.B. Wake Esq. in February 1984. When it was originally opened The Marquess of Tavistock did the honours on 11th July 1888.
