Ponsonby church has many connections with the Stanley family of Calderbridge,and there are numerous memorials to the Ponsonby branch of the Stanley family inside the church.
The church was built of red sandstone in 1840,and in 1874 a nave,chancel and tower were added.
The church is surrounded by a moat,and to enter the church grounds a small gated bridge needs to be crossed.
Inside the church can be viewed some very fine stained glass windows including some of the work of the renowned Henry Holiday.
