The zoo started as a private concern in 1979 taking in sick and injured birds and animals. The recession in 1984 meant that Terry Willers could no longer financially support the zoo alone so he opened the doors to the general public.

The animals are mainly rescued as the zoo takes in those who are now unwanted pets or from other zoos which have closed down. They also take part in captive breeding programmes for release of the animals back into the wild.

There are meercats, squirrel monkeys, terrapins, giant carp, wolves, tigers, lynx and mountain lions. Also there are many small animals including rabbits and insects, fish and invertebrates. There is a tropical house where turtles, lizards, snakes, and caiman.
