In the fall 1803, Captain Meriwether Lewis and William Clark passed this place with about twenty men on their way westward. At the confluence of the Wabash and Ohio Rivers, they first reached territory that is now the State of Illinois. The turned their boats south on the Ohio towards Fort Massac.
