Monument Text:
In memory of
VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS
OF THE
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.[Visited this once proud city, decaying before our eyes. This custom house was busier during the Civil War than Kennedy Airport customs is today. A vast amount of history is down here. U.S. Grant used the custom house, he also was stationed here during the Civil War.
If you decide to visit this city be very careful. Crime is very high since the economy of the city has almost disappeared.]
