Clinton, Mass. is a medium-sized community that still has many of the mills and factories that provided a center for industry in the area. One of the brick mills that still stands was the first complex built and occupied by the Bigelow Carpet Company. The buildings are currently owned by Nypro, which is a plastic injection molding company. At the main entrance, at the corner of Union and High Streets, are a pair of bronze plaques. One of these plaques reads:
"Bigelow Carpet Mills
"Constructed in 1854, it was on this site that carpets were first mass-produced by power looms in America. Looms invented by Erastus Brigham Bigelow in the 1840's revolutionized the carpet manufacturing industry and made him one of the noted inventors of the nineteenth century.
