In California's long rainless summer, coastal rivers slow and may even cease flowing. As a river slows, it drops its load of silt and sand. Here that river silt, combined with deposition of sand by the Pacific longshore current, annually forms a sandbar completely blocking any remaining flow to the ocean. A shallow lagoon backs up behind the bar. As soon as the winter rains return, the river breaks through the sandbar.
Danger: the lagoon should be assumed to be contaminated with coliform bacteria; you should not allow children or pets to wade in the lagoon, regardless of whether there is a warning sign posted or not.
This end of the river is accessible on either side from public beaches (city Main Beach to the west, Seabright State Beach to the east). There is an excellent pedestrian/bikeway along the river for several miles from here inland.
