The entire display of the
USS Blueback
has been declared a memorial to those who are on "Eternal Patrol".
A dedication speech entitled
STILL ON PATROL--BUT SILENT NO LONGER was given by then
Secretary of the Navy, John H. Dalton at the dedication ceremony of
The Blueback Memorial on May 14th, 1994.
The screw (propeller) was removed and placed overlooking the
Blueback's berth and the Willamette River to commemorate and honor
those who have given their lives in service. At the nearby entrance
to the dock that is adjacent another memorial reads as follows;
"Lest We Forget
These words, cut in stone, are a tribute to all
submariners
who volunteered to serve their country in the
submarine service of the United States of America.
Never let it be said of any of us that we
forgot our shipmates on eternal patrol.
