Coast Redwoods are the tallest trees in the world. They are native to California in coastal areas which have abundant moisture and summer fog replenishing the trees. They are insect and fire resistant, living for centuries or millennia, and growing huge as a result. This grove was owned by Henry Cowell and preserved from logging during his lifetime.
Since this grove has become a part of the state park, its natural ecology is protected, with decay of fallen giant trees and growth of new sprouted seedlings visible along the 0.8 mile (1.3 km) nature trail.
