History of Station Lake Worth

United States Coast Guard Station Lake Worth Inlet formed in 1936 as a Life Saving Station on Peanut Island. Located a few hundred yards from the Atlantic Ocean, the Coast Guardsmen patrolled the area during all major wars and conflicts of the past 71 years. President John F. Kennedy even maintained a bomb shelter on the island after the Cuban Missile Crisis. With the Coast Guard missions changing, the station was relocated to the mainland in Riviera Beach in June of 1995, about one mile north of its old location.

Today, the hard working men and women of Coast Guard Station Lake Worth Inlet man a state of the art Multi-Mission Station. As a result of the appeal associated with the South Florida coast and the close proximity to the Bahamas and West Palm Beach, Station Lake Worth has become one of the busiest stations in the Coast Guard. The station responds to an average of 500 search and rescue cases, assisting or saving 600 people and approximately 12 million dollars worth of property. Prosecuting over 300 law enforcement boardings and cases every year, the station responds to drug and migrant interdiction at sea, persons’ boating under the influence, marine environmental protection and general recreational boating safety, while maintaining the security of the ports and coastline.

Coast Guard Station Lake Worth has over 40 active duty and 20 reserve personnel permanently assigned on a 1.5 acre lot, complete with living quarters for multiple crews, a full service galley, administrative offices and even a boat ramp. For recreation, the crews are able to make use of a full size basketball and volleyball courts, a fitness room, and an authentic Tiki Hut. The boats assigned enable the crew to fully complete their mission. The 33 ft Special Purpose Craft is designed for high speed and interdiction of fast boats at sea. The 25 ft Response Boat is highly maneuverable and fast, perfect for enforcing security zones and patrolling the Port of Palm Beach. The 41ft Utility Boat is durable and strong, making it the boat of choice for SAR and inclement weather. These resources are used to cover the entire coast and inland waters from Port St. Lucie to Boca Raton.
