Both are ancient semi-natural woodland sites, characterised by young 20-30 year old regeneration of birch and oak, which has developed following extensive clear felling in the past, although mature oak standards (together with small numbers of other species) are scattered throughout the lower slopes. Additional habitats include a small carr woodland with an associated marsh, and an area of acid grassland which, combined, present a site of quite high nature conservation value.
The woods comprise of approximately 20Ha.
There are two definitive footpaths crossing through the property . There is also a permissive horse route through both woods.
The coordinates given are for an entrance into the woods and parking for a couple of cars.
This wood is semi-natural ancient woodland; this is the most
valuable type of woodland in the country. Looking at the
evidence of the woodland today we can deduce that large
amounts were felled during the General Strike of 1926.
Local rumour suggests that the wood came by its name
when Mary Queen of Scots, passing on her way spent the
night in the woodland with her retinue.
