This modern church, designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, replaced the 1867 version, which burned in 1972. It was the eighth major fire (all suspicious) in downtown Burlington in just 13 months; the nearby Episcopal Cathedral of St. Paul was the first in that string.
The original church was the first in New England specifically designed and dedicated as a cathedral. Photos of that church and the fire are available here.
The modern bell tower stands just a few yards from where this same bell hung in the original steeple.
Most of these exterior shots, including the bell, are at the back of the church. Due to its placement on the property (90° clockwise from the original, facing west rather than south), far more traffic passes the sides and back than the front, thus making those views much more recognizable.
