100% of the artichokes grown in the USA are grown in California, and more than 80% of the acreage is in the northern tip of Monterey County, around Castroville. Since 1947. Castroville has hosted the annual Artichoke Festival. In 1947 the queen of the festival was a young beauty named Norma Jean, later known as the blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe.
