The planetarium opened in 1968 and the heart of the planetarium is a Zeiss Model Vs Star Projector. This precision opto-mechanical machine contains 154 projectors which work together to create an amazingly realistic night sky containing more than 9,000 stars, the Milky Way, the sun, moon and planets. 1968 cost was $125,000; replacement cost now would be $2 million.
There are also 200 auxiliary projector which help with the stunning visual effects.
In the past, Planetarium shows were pre-recorded programs which ran linearly, much like a movie. Now, the Planetarium astronomer delivers the show live, allowing for audience questions and fast updating with new astronomical news and discoveries.
