San Mateo's sister city of Toyonaka, Japan, gave a tall granite pagoda to celebrate the opening of the Japanese Tea Garden in San Mateo's Central Park in 1966. Twenty five years later, they donated this Shinto shinden, or shrine, to honor the anniversary. It is located under the shade of an evergreen inside the bamboo fencing which surrounds the garden.
