Palo Alto Baylands originated as a park in 1921, and was quickly expanded, mainly due to the vision of John Byxbee, to include an airport, a salt-water swimming pool, and a yacht harbor. Of those, only the airport remains; the pool was converted to a migratory bird refuge and the boat access to the San Francisco bay silted closed. Now Baylands park is a center for natural preservation and restoration of the original freshwater and saltwater marshes ringing the bay. There are many miles of hiking trails with opportunities for wildlife viewing, with an emphasis on birding. The ranger station supplies trail maps.
