A. P. Giannini had founded the Bank of Italy in a former saloon in San Francisco in 1904. Then came the great earthquake (and fire) of 1906. He moved his bank to his own home, in then-rural San Mateo, about 18 miles south of the city. From a plank across two barrels he made loans for reconstruction to customers big and small, just on a handshake basis. That was the simple genesis of what is now the impressive Bank of America
Louis Macouillard designed this mural that illustrates both the history of that time and the colorful surroundings of the San Francisco Peninsula. Glass tile was set by Alphonso Purdinas. The mural is 25 feet (8 meters) tall, in five sections covering the front of the building
